This Group B meeting puts Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and the defending European champions against a new look Spain team. The winner of this game will be in pole position to take Group B. Can Spain do away from the painful memories of 2014 and actually make it out of the group this time? They’ll have to put in a good fight against evenly matched Portugal to do so.

Portugal vs Spain

We’ve covered our predictions for the World Cup and who will finish where in each group. In addition to this we think this game is going to be a tough fight but we may just see the Portugal side edge it on this occasion.

Misfiring Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata will still probably be a big feature in the Spain squad this year. Other Spanish young guns Ascensio, Isco and Koke (aged 21, 25 and 25) feature in this game. Spain have the quality of an older backbone to the squad that is still functional. Sergio Ramos, Pique, Busquets, and David Silva are all 29 or older and “getting on a bit” in the football realm but will surely provide the experience and deft, defensive decision making in tricky situations that’ll be needed for this game.

Current European champions Portgual breezed through qualification, winning 9 out of 10 games. We’ll obviously be looking at how Cristiano Ronaldo can settle the “greatest of all time” rivalry with a certain Lionel Messi by winning a World Cup. Also featured is the defensive prowess and of Pepe to help stem the attacking force of Spain. Expect Portugal to employ a similar tactic to the Euros and defend vigorously and counter attack with Ronaldo and Andre Silva.

The wealth of talent in the Portugal side isn’t as large as the Spain squad but if Portugal can replicate the fighting spirit they showed in that Euro 16 final with talisman Ronaldo stretchered off injured in the first half, anything is possible.
